December 18th, 2014 - While the Dirt Late Model world might be over for the year, Bub McCool and McCool Motorsports aren't quite done with the 2014 racing season. Bub and his son, Johnny McCool III, more commonly known as B2, will be going into battle in the inaugural Santa Shootout on December 26th-28th at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center in Jackson, Mississippi. It will mark the first time for either to race Go-Karts.

Bub will be driving entries fielded by Rodney Cole in the Heavy, Super Heavy, and Senior Pro divisions, while B2 will compete in a Buckley-prepared Kart in the Junior 1 class.

"This deal sounds like a lot of fun, and to be able to spend three days with B2, while he gets to race for the first time in his life seems like a great way to spend the holidays," said McCool. "We obviously would love to win, but more than anything we just want to go and have some fun together."

Each day of the event will feature complete programs.

Bub and B2 will have special shirts commemorating their first Go-Kart races, and they will be available for sale at the McCool Motorsports merchandise trailer, which will be set up inside the facility. For more information, please contact Johnny Brady at 601-941-1476.

Seventy-five entries took part in Thursday night's double qualifying rounds, which set the heat race grids for Friday and Saturday night's program.

Bub advanced to a fourth place finish in his heat race on Friday night after starting sixth, which left him one spot short of transferring to the feature. McCool raced to the win in his b-main, earning him the 21st starting spot on the grid for the $12,000 main event. Despite starting near the back of the pack, Bub sliced through the field to register a solid tenth place finish.

Looking to capitalize on his Friday night performance, Bub stormed from the seventh starting spot in his heat race to finish second, which locked him into the twelfth starting spot for the 50 lap finale. Throughout the course of the $12,000-to-win feature, McCool advanced six spot to finish sixth behind race winner, Jimmy Owens, Tim McCreadie, Scott Bloomquist, Billy Moyer and Darrell Lanigan.

Fifty entries took part in the event, which was sanctioned by the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS). Bub started his weekend by qualifying second fastest in his group during time trials before racing to a heat race win on Friday night. As a result he would start third in Saturday's $10,000-to-win finale.

When the main event went green, it was front-row starter, Timothy Culp who assumed the point with McCool hot on his rear bumper. The duo swapped the lead six times until McCool hopped the cushion in turn-four on lap 54 while chasing Culp. Five circuits later McCool slowed to bring out the caution with a broken driveshaft, bringing his chances of a fourth straight Gumbo Nationals victory to an end. McCool advanced to a sixth place finish in the b-main, leaving him just short of locking into the 25 lap, preliminary feature. (Rick Schwallie Photo)

Friday night found the field again split in half for a pair of $5,000-to-win events, and the team would continue to battle the setup on their entry. As a result Bub once again fell short of qualifying for the feature.

On Saturday evening the finale for the prestigious event was held at the 1/2 mile oval, and via his qualifying night performances as well as an invert of six McCool started fifteenth in the second heat race. Despite starting near the back of the pack Bub would finish fourth, which was one spot short of the transfer into the 100 lap, $47,000-to-win finale. He started second in the first b-main, but slipped back to a sixth place finish which brought his weekend to an early end as he failed to earn a starting spot in the main event.
